On International Worker’s Day, the side project that I’ve been working on with the TechFemi team got released.
A few months ago, I saw a message on TechFemi’s Slack channel, which was about a project idea translating Project Include’s recommendations for workplace diversity and inclusion into Korean. (And of course, I joined.)
About Project Include
Project Include’s mission is to give everyone a fair chance to succeed in tech. We are a non-profit that uses data and advocacy to accelerate diversity and inclusion solutions in the tech industry.
We urge companies to implement diversity and inclusion solutions that incorporate the following three values: Inclusion, Comprehensiveness, Accountability
I participated in English-Korean translation, proofreading, editing, and creating a static website as a final result.
It was such a great experience from figuring out the right & correct Korean words to translate into and reviewing other people’s work to creating a static website using VuePress. It was very exciting to meet other women working in the tech industry and share our experiences as well.
After the release, we had a meeting for retrospective using the 4Ls template and I’d like to leave some of the thought I was sharing.

⛳️ What were your expectations?
- I wanted to experience completing a side project from the beginning with people outside of my work.
- I wanted to have a deeper connection with the people in the TechFemi community.
- I wanted to expand my translation & localization expertise and use it for a good cause.
- I wanted to know more about the efforts that have been made in the tech industry for promoting diversity and inclusion.
Liked
💚 What did you like about the project?
- I realized to work with people who live in a different time zone is possible and it is actually pretty efficient when it is well planned and everyone is engaging.
- It was great to have an opportunity to read the whole text of Project Include’s recommendations while editing other people’s translations.
- I enjoyed the meetings with the team! It was fun and empowering to listen to other women’s work experience in the tech industry.
- I like that the release was successful; we were able to deploy the website as a final result.
- I am happy that I contributed to workplace diversity and inclusion.
Learned
✅ What did you learn from the project?
- Working with awesome teammates is not something obvious; it is a blessing and it makes you grow professionally & personally.
- There are so many things to learn from collaboration and cooperation.
- Proofreading(교정) and editing(윤문) are two different things. Aims are different, focuses are different, and the methods are different.
- I learned how to configure VuePress.
- There are always ways to expand one project to another. For example, while doing a retrospective, we came up with ideas like ‘How to VuePress’ workshop, regular discussion sessions about each topic in the recommendations.
- Empowering and encouraging your teammates is an important part of doing your job.
Lacked
🤢 What we could have done better?
- It would have been great if we had more time to discuss each topic while doing the first translation draft.
- Since the original text of Project Include reflects the tech industry in the USA, some of the examples and recommendations do not fit in the Korean context.
- We could have prepared better translation guidelines in the beginning phase. Otherwise, it can cause burdens for the person doing editing later.
